HONORING YOUR LOVED ONE’S LEGACY THROUGH CREMATION
Some forty or fifty years ago there was only a very small percentage of the population using cremation services. Now, it is approaching half of the population who chooses cremation in Marietta, GA for their loved one or for their own personal pre-plan.
Why is this? For starters, the cost is much more affordable. As with weddings, the cost for a traditional burial is on the rise. This is largely in part to do with the resources used and the amount of land space available for the growing population. Further, cremation services have become a more attractive option due to the flexibility for family members dispersed across the country and modern rituals like ash scattering, in-home urn placement, etc.
Here at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home & Crematory, we want our community here in Marietta, GA to feel comfortable with all options available to them for their loved ones (and for themselves in the future). So, let’s review some of the basics regarding cremation, shall we?
What is cremation?
Most are familiar with what cremation is. But, not everyone is. Cremation refers only to the final disposition of the physical remains. During the cremation process, the physical remains are burned (here, in an on-site crematory) into ashes, or cremains—the powdered remains from the bones.
How can you be sure the ashes you receive are your loved one’s cremains?
Here at Davis-Struempf, we follow a very strict process to ensure the integrity and identification of your loved one. Further, there are very clear laws set in place for all crematories to follow (these can be found online, here: https://no2crematory.wordpress.com/ga-laws-rules-regulations-for-crematories/). Know that it is our sincere commitment to the families who entrust us with their loved one’s remains that we will follow all procedures accurately and with reverence.
What is the process of cremation?
The basic process is as follows:
- Identification of the physical remains
- Detailed fingerprinting (when possible)
- Transfer of the body from the place of death to our facility
- A meeting with the family members or next-of-kin for next steps
- The creation of a cremation checklist, including necessary signatures
- The actual cremation of the deceased in our on-site crematory
- Delivery of the remains in the selected container (i.e.: urn)
- The filing of necessary paperwork
- Assistance in creating or publishing an obituary
- Grief support and online grief management
- The arrangement of funeral or memorial services—these can be before or after the actual cremation
