If you told someone that you were planning to be cremated when you died as recently as 20 years ago, the first question out of their mouth would have been “Why?” Back then, there weren’t many people choosing cremations in Smyrna, GA over traditional burials.

But in 2018, more than 50 percent of the U.S. population is choosing to be cremated when they die. And once again people are asking “Why?” It’s amazing to see just how socially acceptable cremation has become in such a short amount of time.

There are many reasons why cremation is more socially accepted now than it was just two decades ago. Here are several of the reasons why we’re seeing more and more people choose cremations over traditional burials today.

More religions have started to accept cremation.

It wasn’t all that long ago that most of the world’s major religions were still steadfastly against people holding Smyrna, GA cremation services. But in recent years, many religions have finally come around to allowing their followers to utilize cremation. There are still some religions, like Judaism and Islam, that are mostly against it. But you’ll find that Catholicism and many forms of Christianity are now on board with the cremation craze. That alone has played a major part in the spike in the number of cremations in the U.S.

Many of the common cremation myths have been busted.

For years, a lot of people steered clear of cremation simply because of the myths that surrounded it. There were many people who believed, for instance, that your remains could potentially get mixed up with someone else’s remains when you were cremated. But thanks to the internet, many of these common myths about cremation have now been busted. People have a much better understanding of cremation today than they did even just a few short years ago.

Most people are seeing the sense in choosing cremation.

When you sit down and crunch the numbers, it typically costs a lot less to cremate someone than it does to bury them. Additionally, cremation gives families a lot more options as far as honoring their loved ones after death. Rather than burying them in a cemetery, they can display their remains in their homes, scatter their ashes in a special place, or find another way to pay tribute to them. When you consider those options, it’s not hard to see why so many people have accepted cremation. It makes too much sense to ignore.

At Davis-Struempf Funeral Home & Crematory, we have seen the attitude towards cremation completely shift over the last 20 years. People used to come to us almost exclusively for our traditional burials, but today, they’re taking advantage of all of our Smyrna, GA funeral services, including cremation.
